Comments
"As a J.R.R.Tolkien LORD OF THE RINGS fan, I chose to write a work based on this epic, a commission for Peter Loel Boonshaft and the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble, The Awakening of the Ents, featuring Treebeard (or Fangorn in Sindarin) in the “March of the Ents." This march shows a definite jazz influence while featuring the percussion section and singing (in the language of Rohan) by men's voices." The Awakening of the Ents, premiered in Hartford, CN June 9, 1985, by Peter Loel Boonshaft and the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble, was slightly revised and published by Ludwig Music in 1987. It was performed the same year by Harvey G. Bernstein with the Ohio State University Symphonic Band and later, 1992, at Ball State University with Joseph Scagnoli conducting.
