(ŠVarg Vikernes 1991)

When night falls
she cloaks the world
in impenetrable darkness.
a chill rises
from the soil
and contaminates the air
suddenly...
life has new meaning

Comments
The generic context of these lyrics, and the fact that the song's title is translated into German (Dunkelheit) on the album cover, suggest that this song is not intended to allude specifically to Tolkien's mythology. Its title may be seen simply as a reflex of Varg Vikernes' use of Black Speech for aesthetic effect. Of this song, Varg says in an interview: 'I also wrote the "Burzum" song, which appears on the Filosofem album. Very short, simple lyrics: When night falls / She cloaks the world in impenetrable darkness / A chill rises from the soil and contaminates the air / Suddenly, life has new meaning. Quite simple, more mystical really.' (Lords of Chaos p. 151)
